Bike Rental in Darjeeling: Our Terms & Conditions Every Rider Must Know
Mountain roads. Tea gardens. Mist rolling through valleys. That’s what pulls people to rent bikes here.
But hold on a second.
Before you sign anything—before you hand over your license and deposit—you need to understand what you’re agreeing to. Most rental disputes? It happened because someone didn’t read these terms. Or worse, the rental company never spelled them out clearly.
At Road Riders, we’ve operated since 2014. Government-approved Black number plates. Legally certified for commercial use. We’ve seen enough rental headaches to know that clarity upfront saves everyone trouble later.
So here’s everything. Plain language. No legal maze.
Who Can Rent From Us
Not everyone qualifies. Basic requirements exist for good reason.
- Age requirement: Minimum 18 years. Some larger bikes may require riders to be 21 or older depending on engine capacity.
- Indian nationals bring:
- Original driving license. Appropriate class endorsement for vehicle type. Two-wheeler endorsement for motorcycles. Gearless endorsement works only for scooters.
- Government photo ID. Aadhaar is preferred. Voter ID or PAN Card accepted.
- Passport-sized photograph.
- Foreign tourists bring:
- International Driving Permit. Non-negotiable. Your home country license alone won’t satisfy Indian traffic law.
- Original passport with valid visa.
- Return flight documentation.
- Photograph.
Missing any of these? We can’t process your rental. Bike rental in Darjeeling requires proper documentation. No exceptions.
Bike Rental Agreement & Contract Details
When you rent a bike in Darjeeling from us, you’re signing a binding agreement. That document specifies:
- Vehicle details including registration, make, model, current odometer reading
- Exact rental period with pickup and return times
- Security deposit amount
- Geographic restrictions
- Your acknowledgment of all terms listed here
Both parties get a copy. Both parties know exactly what’s agreed.
Security Deposit Structure
Every motorcycle rental Darjeeling booking requires a refundable security deposit.
How amounts are determined
- Scooter rental in Darjeeling carries a lower deposit.
- Standard motorcycles fall mid-range.
- Premium adventure bikes require higher amounts.
Full refund happens when
- The bike returns in pickup condition. No damage beyond normal wear.
- No traffic violations linked to vehicles during your rental.
- Fuel level matches or differences settled.
Deductions happen for
- Damage requiring repair.
- Missing parts or accessories.
- Unpaid traffic challans discovered later.
- Excessive cleaning needed.
Joint inspection at pickup. Joint inspection at return. Any deduction gets an itemized explanation.
Pre-Rental Bike Inspection Checklist
This protects you. And us. Before you take the bike:
- We check it together
- Existing scratches, dents, marks get photographed and documented
- Fuel level noted
- Odometer recorded
- You sign acknowledging current condition
Our advice? Take your own photos too. Timestamp them. Protects both parties if questions arise later.
We guarantee every bike leaves our shop mechanically sound. Brakes tested. Lights working. Tyres checked. Legal documents currently—registration, insurance, pollution certificate.
Where You Can Actually Ride
Our two wheeler rental Darjeeling service permits operation in:
- Darjeeling district—all tourist areas
- Kalimpong district
- Sikkim (Protected Area Permit required for certain zones)
- Dooars region
- Bhutan (additional border documentation needed)
What’s not permitted:
- Taking bikes outside these zones violates agreement.
- Off-road trails not designated for vehicles—prohibited.
- Racing or stunt riding terminates rental immediately without refund.
Permit note: Sikkim requires Protected Area Permit for restricted areas. Arranging this is your responsibility. We’ll guide you on process and documentation. But don’t leave it for last minute—processing takes time.
Bike Rental Duration & Pricing Options
Flexibility matters. Different trips need different arrangements.
- Hourly bike rental Darjeeling: Quick local exploration. Mall Road. Batasia Loop. A few hours around town.
- Daily bike rental Darjeeling: Full 24-hour period from pickup time. Most popular choice.
- Multi-day rentals: Extended tours to Gangtok, Pelling, beyond. Weekly rates available. Better value for longer trips.
Extension and Late Return Policy
Plans change on mountain trips. Weather happens. We get it.
Extending your rental: Contact us before your return deadline. Extensions depend on bike availability. Rates confirmed when you request.
Running late without notice? Grace period exists—29 minutes typically. Beyond that, additional day charges apply. Returning hours late without communication? Penalty fees kick in.
Why this matters: Someone else may have booked that bike. Late returns affect other travelers’ plans. Communication solves most problems.
What’s Included—And What’s Not
Every bike hire in Darjeeling from our fleet includes:
- Helmet for rider
- Basic emergency tool kit
- All legal documents – Registration Certificate copy, insurance, PUC certificate
- Roadside assistance contact number
Not included:
- Fuel. The bike comes with minimal. Fill up immediately after pickup.
- Traffic fines. Your violation, your payment.
- Damage from accidents or negligence.
- Personal riding gear—jackets, gloves, additional helmets.
- Pillion helmet (available on request).
Damage and Loss Liability
Mountain roads are unpredictable. The weather shifts fast. Gravel appears suddenly. We understand.
- Normal wear and tear: Acceptable. Expected on hill roads. We’re reasonable about minor stuff.
- Damage from accidents or negligence: Renter’s full responsibility. Repair costs deducted from deposit. Costs exceeding deposit? You cover the difference. Assessment based on actual repair bills—not arbitrary estimates.
- Mechanical failures: If something breaks through no fault of yours—contact us immediately. Genuine mechanical issues not caused by rider negligence? We handle it. We’ll either arrange a repair or replacement bike depending on the situation.
- Theft or total loss: Police report required within 24 hours. Copy submitted to us. Renter liable for the vehicle’s current market value minus whatever insurance recovers.
- Punctures during rental: Your responsibility. Part of riding. Carry repair kit or know nearest service point.
Insurance Reality
Our bikes carry mandatory third-party insurance as required by Indian law.
What that covers:
- Third-party injury claims within policy limits.
- Third-party property damage within policy terms.
What that doesn’t cover:
- Your personal injury.
- Your pillion’s injury.
- Damage to the rented bike itself.
- Your personal belongings.
Strong recommendation: Carry personal travel insurance covering medical emergencies. Mountain accidents happen. We’re not liable for injuries or health issues during the rental period.
Prohibited Activities
These terminate your rental immediately. No refund.
- Riding under influence. Zero tolerance. Alcohol and these roads don’t mix. We hear about it? Rental ends.
- Unauthorized riders. Only documented renters operate the bike. Lending to friends—even briefly—violates agreement.
- Traffic violations. Fines are your responsibility. Any challans appearing against vehicles during your rental period get charged to you.
- Subletting. Renting our bike to someone else? Agreement terminated. Legal action possible.
- Overloading. Two persons maximum. These machines aren’t designed for three.
- Improper maintenance during rental. Running on empty fuel, ignoring warning lights, riding with obvious mechanical issues—all your responsibility.
Cancellation Terms
- More than 48 hours before pickup: Full refund minus processing fee.
- 24-48 hours before: 50% refund.
- Less than 24 hours: No refund.
- No-show without any communication: No refund.
- Refund processing: Within 7 working days to the original payment method.
Fuel Policy
The bike comes with minimal fuel. Just enough to reach the nearest pump. Return with a similar level—or pay the difference. We don’t charge inflated rates for fuel settlement. Current pump prices apply.

Road Riders has served riders since 2014. Government-approved. Transparent terms. Support when things go wrong. Questions about anything here? Ask before signing. We’d rather explain everything upfront than deal with confusion on some mountain road later.
